Pitch Drawn from the Directors own experience in the U.S. Navy, Burning Blue is the story of a group of F/A-18 fighter pilots and their spouses whose careers and personal lives are thrown into disarray when two of the men unexpectedly fall in love. After being seen in a gay club while on liberty in New York City, our protagonist, Lt. Dan Lynch one of the fleets top-ranked pilots -- is apprehended by military agents, isolated from his squadron mates, family and friends and forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. Seen through the lens of the Dont Ask, Dont Tell military, Burning Blue is at once a raucously funny, deeply tragic, and utterly compelling love story that explores the complicated nature of friendship and love between men with uncommon clarity and insight. Running parallel to the civil rights struggle for federally recognized same-gender marriage equality and the ongoing effort to finally achieve cultural acceptance -- beyond the current tolerance -- of gay relationships, there is a timeliness and urgency to these issues which will continue to be relevant through the 2012 election and beyond. Originally depicted on the stage in 1995, Nicholas DeJonge of The Evening Standard described Burning Blue as: The most topical, spellbinding play in London Since then it has attracted a mostly mainstream audience of more than 100,000 people in 7 productions around the globe including London, Tel Aviv, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Los Angeles and New York. Identifiable markets include the gay community, the military -- estimated active duty and veterans groups totaling more than 30 million people -- and women of all ages and backgrounds who have expressed a fascination with the storys depiction of the male psyche. The best way to effect change is through personal experience -- having the opportunity to get to know they who are nothing more, nothing less than unfamiliar expressions of all of us. In the absence of a personal encounter, which could lead to meaningful conversation, films like Burning Blue can make this intimate, deeply personal experience possible. We fall in love with the characters as they fall in love with each other -- we identify with their joy and their struggle and our hearts and minds shift. Navy fighter pilots Lt. Dan Lynch and Lt. Will Stephensen are the closest of friends. Will is married with a son and Dan is engaged to longtime love, Nancy, but when Dan falls for replacement squadron mate, Matt Blackwood, everybodys worlds unravel. Logline Option 1: The lives and careers of a group of Navy fighter pilots and their spouses are thrown into disarray when two of them find themselves in the midst of a forbidden love affair. Logline Option 2: Two Navy fighter pilots find themselves in the midst of a forbidden relationship throwing their lives, families and careers into disarray. Logline Option 3: A Navy fighter pilots world is thrown into disarray when he falls in love with a squadron mate creating a dilemma that isolates him from his friends, family and fiancee as he struggles to find the truth of his new reality. Written in 1992, Burning Blue is compelling love story set against the backdrop of the U.S. Navy as experienced through the lens of the repressive Dont Ask Dont Tell policy. Begs the question What if our heros true love survives. Even after the repeal of Dont Ask Dont Tell they would be ineligible for the same benefits as their peers maintaining a shared home in government quarters like all of their heterosexual colleagues is forbidden. Without the nationwide repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act without the civil right to marry in any of the 50 states and have it recognized federally these Americans will forever be second class. The injustice of the current situation cannot be ignored. The story appeals to the fair-minded and compassionate in humanity. An estimated 100,000 people saw the stage play in seven different productions around the world. This is some of what the press said: London JoBerg Tel Aviv Los Angeles San Francisco New York Burning Blue is more than a historical depiction of a policy that destroyed countless lives and careers its a call to action for the ongoing/continuing struggle towards equality and acceptance. Beyond Tolerance. Following two fatal aircraft accidents aboard an America aircraft carrier, a government agent is placed aboard the ship posing as a Safety Officer from Washington D.C. His mission -- to determine what may be at the root of these mishaps and prevent the inevitable third chain-breaking accident abruptly changes course when a young sailor reports seeing one of the fleets top-ranking fighter pilots in a gay club. The aviator (son of The Chief of Naval Operations) and three of his squadron mates and their spouses become the subject of a deadly modern-day witch hunt entangling them in a web of jealousy and deceit which tests their concept of love, friendship and honour and changes their lives forever.
